Fast Trax - Final Wax Recommendation

Edmonton Alberta Cups 5 & 6

Event information:

Saturday - interval start, skate
Sunday - interval start, classic
Race notice - ENSC race notice

Weather:

Forecast conditions have cooled significantly from yesterday's expectations!

Saturday:

Forecast morning lows range from -6 to -15, but the consensus seems to be on the colder end of that range. Forecast daytime highs range from -4 to +2, but the consensus seems to be withing a degree or two of zero. Skies are likely to be cloudy.

Sunday:

Forecast morning lows range from -4 to -12, but the consensus seems to be on the warmer end of that range. Forecast daytime highs range from +1 to +3.

Recommendation and test results:

Base layer - Swix CH4, Solda S30, or Ski*Go C380

Race paraffin test results (in order of speed):
1) Ski*Go HF violet / HF yellow (50/50 mixture)
2) Holmenkol Matrix blue
3) Swix HF6 and Holmenkol Matrix red (it was a tie between these)
4) Ski*Go HF violet
5) Swix HF7

Race paraffin recommendation - Holmenkol Matrix blue (or Swix HF6, although it was definitely behind in the test)

Discussion:

Given the drop in forecast temperatures and cold overnight lows, the application of an initial hardening layer continues to be of importance and will make a big difference in ski speed for the duration of the race.

Although the temperature was very warm today, it is important to remember that the vast majority of the race course is in the shade. The snow on course is not wet and heavy. Rather, the snow, is still powdery. Therefore, it is not entirely surprising to see cold waxes running, especially given the temperatures of the past few days.

The Ski*Go mixture was the clear winner tonight and it felt amazing. However, given the cold overnight lows that are being forecast, that wax is unlikely to be as fast come morning. This mixture will be a definite consideration for Sunday's race.

The Matrix blue, on the other hand, will continue to get faster as the temperature drops. It will be an awesome choice for Saturday.
